Where can you get a cold beer, a good feed, listen to a gripping yarn and a dose of pioneering history? Jane Hodges discovers Rudd's Pub, the perfect watering hole for weary travellers.

When storyteller Brian Hodgkinson looks around the table at the captivated faces of his listeners he knows he is a powerful man.

Brian is resident storyteller at Rudd's Pub in the small township of Nobby, 39km south of Toowoomba on Queensland's Darling Downs. Toowoomba is 90 minutes drive west of Brisbane.

He treats pub patrons to Steele Rudd's legendary yarns of Dad & Dave and On Our Selection, some of which were penned in the pub by its namesake nearly 100 years ago.

The town of Nobby is alive and kicking thanks to tourism and Rudd's Pub. The pub's rich history is creating a lot of tourism for the town.

Rudd's Pub hosts day-trippers who come by the bus load to the memorabilia-crammed little pub to hear a yarn while enjoying a monstrous roast lunch. The pub walls are covered in a collage of old photographs and documents chronicling the town's history and a couple of hours can easily be spent scouring the collection.

It seems that the early settlers of Nobby had their priorities right. The pub was one of the first buildings in the town and it seems only fitting that the pub is now ensuring Nobby's place on the map.
