Date: January 2006
Location: Bundaberg, Queensland Australia
Bundaberg    Bundaberg Region's beaches provide a welcome respite, not only from the summer heat but for the hip pocket as well.

It's great to cool down at the beach during the summer break, but matching a beautiful location with a budget and the kids can be difficult.

Just 12km east of Bundaberg, Bargara offers the perfect family environment.

With a range of flight options to Bundaberg Airport and being only a four and a half hour drive from Brisbane, the region is wonderfully accessible.

And low-cost activities and attractions mean there's no shortage of fun to be had!

Check out Neilson Park Beach, Kelly's Beach, the Oaks Beach and Elliott Heads Beach. They're all excellent for rock walking on the beach fringes and looking for marine life in the rock pools.

Head to Moore Park 21km north of Bundaberg and discover 20km of golden beach, backed by she-oak casuarinas, pandanus and tea trees. There are a range of low-key activities including swimming, fishing, beach walking, a wetlands boardwalk and the beach is four-wheel-drive accessible.

Educate the tribe with a trip to Bargara Berries. At this strawberry farm just inland of Bargara, learn about how these indulgent fruits go from paddock to plate.

Sit in the shade of their caf and indulge in some strawberry-inspired dishes and a coffee.

Also just outside Bargara is Mon Repos Conservation Park a hive of activity between November and March when the turtle rookery hosts thousands of nesting and hatching loggerhead turtles. The cost is $20 per family with no limit on the number of children.

Situated off the road to Bargara is The Hummock which offers views over the whole area.

If all the relaxing becomes too much take the family to the Coral Isles Kart Track located on Burnett Heads Road, Bundaberg. Their waterslide is $7 per person (per day) for groups of four or more and kart hire starts at $25 for 30 minutes (including a dual kart where the littlies can ride with mum or dad and still have their own steering wheel).

Heading further up the coast is Rules Beach (about an hour's drive from Bundaberg), not only a beautiful, quiet spot on the coast but also home to Camelot Camel Park.

The park is on Lindy Drive and their camel safaris take you through pockets of rainforest and secluded beaches. Accommodation is available here as well as fishing, swimming and barbecues.

There are heaps of great accommodation options around Bargara ranging from beach-front caravan parks, to motels and self contained holiday homes.

Try Bargara Beach Caravan Park right on the beach offering unpowered sites from $19 ($5 for each extra person) or cabins from $65 ($6 for each extra person).

Alternatively you could try Bargara Beach Motor Inn with a two-bedroom spa suite starting at $99 per double ($10 for each extra bed used).
