Describe your experience:
An old butcher's shop in Wondai, in Queensland's South
Burnett region, became a vehicle for farming family Carol, Bob and Graham
Mitchell, who in 1985 decided to try their hand at running a small business.
The butcher's shop, even with its leaking roof, rattling roofing iron and creeping-rot in the rafters and roof trusses, served them well during their apprenticeship in business, operating as 'Tall Timbers Nursery and Flowers'.
A lucky sighting of an advertisement offering a house for removal caught their attention and in 1997 it was purchased and transported from Hivesville to Wondai, replacing that first building which was marked to be demolished.
Now known as Dimitie's Cottage the Queenslander-style building from the 1930s is operating as a restaurant, tea gardens and craft shop.
Dimitie's Cottage was recently recognised by the tourism industry as the winner in the eateries and cafes category at the Fraser Coast South Burnett Tourism Awards.
Open seven days a week Dimitie's Cottage serves Devonshire tea, lunches and evening meals, with guests selecting either the dining room venue or a candle-lit dinner on the verandah. However, such is its popularity that reservations are essential.
