The town is Northland's major city with a population of around 68,000. It's a very green city bursting with parks,
gardens and murals. The waterfront has been developed in the style of the early settlers and is permeated today with cafes,
restaurants and galleries.
The Town Basin development faces the famous harbour which attracts boats from all around the world. Mount Parahaki towers 241m
above the city and offers amazing views. Also in the area are superb beaches and some great diving, notable on visits to the
Poor Knights Islands. 21km off the shore from Tutukaka, the islands where
nominated by Jacques Cousteau
as one of the world's top five diving locations. Another nearby attraction is Whangarei
Falls, located 5km north of town. The falls
tumble over an old basalt lava flow and offer several natural swimming holes.
