WEST COAST
Calling Code: +64 3
Rugged is the word often used when it comes to the South Island's West Coast. It's quite an amazing place sparsely
inhabited, untouched in many areas and studded with geographical wonders. The West coast is iconic Kiwi country. The landscapes are as unusual
as they are spectacular. The people are hard as nails - you'd have to be to dream up something like the Hokitika Wild Foods Festival - but
have hearts of gold.
Among the major attractions of the region are the frozen waves of the two
mighty glaciers, Fox and Franz Josef, and
Paparoa National Park with the Pancake Rocks. Don't forget to pick up some of the
local greenstone.
