WELLINGTON
Calling Code: +64 4
Situated on the edge of a spectacular natural harbour, surrounded by hills, Wellington is a stunning and compact city.
Wellington, like San Francisco, is located directly on a major
earthquake fault. The biggest quake was in 1855
and measured 8 on the Richter Scale. No doubt one day, any day, the city will experience another massive quake just as they are
bound to have a massive volcanic eruption.
Whether you're looking for a bit of civilized fun or some wild adventure, chances are its here in the
region. The cradle of government, Wellington is also the undisputed capital of culture, the arts, restaurants, fashion and nightlife in
New Zealand. And it's home to the
largest cultural attraction in New Zealand, the Te Papa Museum which is well worth a look, and it's free! The nightlife in
Wellington pretty much pumps day and night. Check out Courtenay Place, a playground of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs.
Quick tips/suggestions
Wellington's stunning scenery makes exploring outdoors a real highlight. Visit seal colonies in the wild, take the famous red
cable car up to the botanical gardens, try a ferry ride across the harbor to Eastbourne, climb Mt. Victoria for breathtaking views,
or combine them all in a Wellington Rover scenic tour around the city bays.
Best Way to Get Around
Wellington has a comprehensive local bus service that links the city to the suburbs; trolley buses run frequently
between the eastern end of Courtenay Place and the train station, along Lambton Quay. Call the Rideline Service Centre
on (04) 801 7000 for all train and bus information in the Wellington region. Downtown Wellington is a compact diverse center easily navigable on foot.
