WANAKA
Meaning: Corruption of Oanaka
Calling Code: +64 3
Situated in the heart of the Southern Lakes, Wanaka is ringed by golden hills, snow-clad peaks,
ancient forests and crystal
clear lakes and rivers. The town is situated on the edge of beautiful Lake Wanaka and has become a popular holiday destination for Kiwis and
overseas visitors alike.
Known in the winter for its ski fields, and in summer for its water sports and
walks. As Wanaka's appeal to the visitor increases so do the number of world-lass
festivals and events. Wanaka hosts the biggest 3 day airshow in the
Southern Hemisphere - Warbirds Over Wanaka - and the international World Heli-Challenge where the world's best snowboards and skiers tackle
the demanding backcountry alpine slopes. Motor sport action takes place in the Cardrona valley a Easter with the International Hillclimb
where the world's top driers race the clock and each other on a 13km charge up the Waiorau Snow Farm access road in a Rae to the Sky.
Quick tips/suggestions
Skydiving and scenic flights are available at the airport, which is also the base to the NZ Fighter Pilot's Museum. The Maze and Puzzling
World will keep you amused for hours.
