Review of Wairoa New Zealand WAIROA
Calling Code: +64 6

Near the mouth of the Wairoa River, this former port town is the closest major settlement to Mahia Peninsula, and the lighthouse in Marine Parade once did duty on Portland Island.

The river is popular for boating, yachting, fishing, sailing, water skiing and swimming. Features include gardens, limestone caves, Whakaki Lagoon and bird sanctuary, Takitimu Marae, Kahungunu at Nuhaka and Whakamahi Beach. Set in native forest, Morere Hot Springs are 45km east of Wairoa and a great place to enjoy a thermal spa.

The Scenic Reserve has several beautiful walks through native bush. Wairoa is an ideal base for visiting Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera National Park.
