Review of Thames New Zealand THAMES
Calling Code: +64 7

Thames, known as the Gateway to the Coromandel, is the regions service centre and is the main shopping centre on the peninsula. Thames in the late 19th century was one of New Zealand's largest towns, built on the pioneering industries of gold and Kauri logging. This colorful history is still alive in the pubs, buildings, museums and activities in the area.

Fringing the town is the Thames estuary and dramatic volcanic hills of the Coromandel range and Kauanga Valley. The Kauaeranga Valley lies in the hills just behind Thames and offers extensive walking track and camping opportunities as well as some of the more adventurous activities that the peninsula has to offer. Stay a day and take the walk to the highest point on the Peninsula, The Pinnacle's.

The Goldmine Experience on the outskirts of town gives you an insight into the gold mining era on the Peninsula, you can take a guided tour through the 19th century Stamper Battery and into one of the richest goldmines of the time.
