Review of international travel to Thailand
Thailand is one of the largest countries in Southeast Asia with varied attractions for the visitor, from the teeming streets of Bangkok to the forests and hill tribes of the Chiang Mai region. The Kingdom of Thailand has been an independent nation since AD1238 and is the only country in Southeast Asia that was never colonized by a foreign power.

Since 1932 the political system has been a constitutional monarchy inspired by the British model. On 27 September 1997, the Thai parliament voted in a new charter Thailand's 16th such since 1932 and the first to be decreed by a civilian government.

The current king is His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej and is the ninth king of the Chakri dynasty, founded in 1782. He is the longest reigning monarch is Thai history; he ascended the throne in 1946 following the death of Rama VIII, who had reigned for only one year. He was born in the US and educated in both Bangkok and Switzerland; he is fluent in English, French, German and Thai. The king has little direct power under the constitution but is a symbol of national identity and unity. King Bhumibol - who has been on the throne since 1946 - commands enormous popular respect and moral authority, which he has used on occasion to resolve political crises that have threatened national stability.

About 75% of citizens are ethnic Thais, who can be divided into 4 groups: Central Thais or Siamese, Thai Lao of northeastern Thailand, Thai Pak Tai of southern Thailand and northern Thais.

Thailand spends less than 3% of it's GDP on defense in a typical year. Police corruption is common - recruits earn just US$150 a month on salary so many take extra tea money whenever they can.

Bangkok is daunting and exhilarating at the same time. It's nightlife is legendary - if not infamous - and the food hot and tasty. It's also a great city for shopping with Thai silks and silver among the best buys. The Chatuchak park market is well worth exploring for bargains. Most backpacker services can be found in the Khao San Road, where you can book tours and onward travel all over SE Asia.

If you're looking for a beach, the islands (kohs) of Koh Samui or Koh Pha Ngan are among the most popular budget resorts. Try Koh Tao for diving, Koh Phi Phi for jetset glamour and Koh Lanta for a beautifully unspoilt, laid-back getaway.
