TE ANAU
Calling Code: +64 3
Home to the second largest lake in New Zealand, Te Anau is a beautiful little town which boasts great fishing and interesting birdlife.
Te Anau means "to arrive by water" and there are a multitude of activities on and around the lake to keep you buys.
Nearby the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves counts among its residents a large collection of glowworms. A small punt will glide you through this massive web of rock
while a guide tells you what to look out for.
Just north of the town is Te Anau Downs which boasts excellent
fishing, walking and accommodation facilities and is also the
starting point for the Milford Track. The Wildlife Centre, just
out of Te Anau, houses many of these birds with the star attraction
undoubtedly being the extremely rare and flightless takahe.
The town is a good jumping off point for the magnificent World Heritage Fiordland National Park.
