TARANAKI
Calling Code: +64 6
South of the King Country lies
the province of Taranaki, best known for its stunning, snow-capped mountain, Mount Taranaki
(formerly known as Mt Egmont).
Peaceful and naturally impressive, Taranaki has ski fields, great walking and excellent surf beaches. It is also possible
to climb to the top of the mountain. The 'Naki also doubled as Mount Fuji in the movie The Last Samurai.
All the coast bound locals surf or windsurf and its one of the few places in the
world where the backdrop to fantastic waves is a snowy mountain.

New Plymouth is the only city in Taranaki and its commercial hub. The city is
renowned for its lovely parks and gardens. Rhododendrons and azaleas thrive in
the region's volcanic soil. The Rhododendron Festival, held annually in late October
and early November, involves more than 50 private and public gardens.
Maori settled through Taranaki before the arrival of the Europeans. The wars of
the 1860s began here and some of the fiercest engagements took place in the area.
a number of fortified sites may be visited and museums through the area preserve
the history of the region.
Taranaki is dairy country and is also home to New Zealand's gas and oil fields.
New Zealand's only known petrochemical deposits lie in the Taranaki regions, offshore
from Oaonui and at Kapuni and Stratford. Synthetic fuel is produced at the Motunui
plant where there is an information centre.
