Located on the eastern coast of Africa south of Kenya and north of
Mozambique, Tanzania is a country of vast open spaces
and abundant wildlife. Although near the coastline of the Indian Ocean its terrain is a flat plain, moving inland it rises into a
plateau reaching about 4000 feet. In fact, Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain (19,341 feet), stands in the northeastern part
of the country near the Kenyan border.
More than twenty-five percent of Tanzanian terrain is reserved for wildlife and national parks. Elephants, giraffes, antelope,
gorillas, hippopotamuses and dozens of other animals make their homes on the savannah and can be observed by tourists on safari.
However, the central plateau's animal population is low, due to the infestation of tsetse flies, which can spread illnesses to both
humans and animals.
