The Republic of Tajikistan is one of the five central Asian republics that formed part of the former Soviet Union.
The World Bank classifies Tajikistan as a "low-income" developing country. Agriculture
is the main activity and cotton is the chief product. Other crops include fruits,
grains, and vegetables. The country has large hydroelectric power resources and
it produces aluminium.
