Taihape is a popular "half way to everywhere stop" on State Hwy 1,
about one hour to the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu. The town has a variety of cafes
and shops, plus pleasant picnic spots as well as the playground. Internationally
recognized as the Gumboot Throwing Capital of New Zealand, a permanent throwing
lane operates on selected days.
The Information Centre has a 7 day a week booking service for ferries, trains and coaches and
information about activities including bungy jumping - the highest in the North Island - rafting,
fishing, hunting and heritage tours.
