TAHAA
Calling Code: +689
As legend has it, Tahaa and Raiatea were originally one island until a giant eel swallowed a young girl.
Possessed by her spirit, the enraged creature broke through the surface of the earth, causing the sea to gush. The impact
of the water cut the island in two and Raiatea and Tahaa were created.
These sister islands sit 122 miles (192km) northwest of Papeete and 25 miles
(40km) west of Huahine and share a common coral foundation and protected lagoon.
This enchanting paradise, endowed with a magnificent, turquoise lagoon, surrounded
by "motus", islets of superb, white, sand beaches, is an ancient volcano dominated
by Mount Ohiri (598m - 1962ft) with its exceptional panorama. Notched with deep
valleys which giver her her jagged form, this savage island is equally renowned
for the picturesque quality of her archaeological sites hidden by the coconut
trees, ferns and grasses which flourish up the peaks.
The "Vanilla Island", so nicknamed because of the precious orchids that prosper on numerous plantations, remains virtually saturated with the intoxicating around of the beans which perfume the coastline and the hibiscus-bordered villages nestled in the hills.
