Located in central Europe, Switzerland is bordered by France,
Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein,
Italy.
Switzerland is one of Europe's most visited countries, but one of its least understood.
Pass through for a day or two, as most people do, and you'll get the quaint stereotype of Switzerland that the locals
deem suitable for public consumption - the Alpine idyll of cheese and chocolate, Heidi and the Matterhorn. Stay longer
though and another Switzerland will emerge, the one which the Swiss inhabit, and one which can be an infinitely more
rewarding place to explore.
The four different parts (French speaking, German speaking, Italian speaking and Romansch) of the country all have a
very distinct atmosphere which makes it an adventure to explore. Switzerland is nature's playground and offers numerous
opportunities for outdoor activities. The Alps and the Jura slopes are great places for skiing. Hiking, mountaineering and
ski mountaineering, paragliding and hang-gliding, water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing, rafting, and canoeing are some of the
outdoor activities that you can undertake in Switzerland.
The picturesque city of Zurich,
located on the banks of the Limmat River, is the intellectual and cultural capital of Switzerland and the hub of
tourist activity. The 13th-century St. Peter's Church and the Fraumnster Church are two important sights. An evening walk
along the banks of Lake Zrich or the alleys of the old town will cover almost all the attractions of the city. Of the
northern German-speaking cities, Zrich has a wealth of sightseeing and nightlife possibilities and
provides easy access to the tiny independent principality of Liechtenstein overlooking the Rhine.
On the banks of the River Rhne is Geneva, a city that houses over 200 international
organizations.
The ropeway journey to Mont Salve offers a breathtaking view of the entire city. The Cathedral St Pierre, Place du Bourg-de-Four,
Museum of Art and History, Petit Palais, Museum of Old Musical Instruments, and the Horology Museum are some attractions of
Geneva.
Basel and especially the capital Bern are quieter, each with an attractive historic core, while
Luzern is in an appealing setting close to
lakes and mountains. South of the Alps, sunny, Italian-speaking Ticino can seem a
world apart from the rest of the country, particularly the palm-fringed lakeside resorts of Lugano
and Locarno, with their Mediterranean, riviera atmosphere. In the southeastern
corner of the country, wild, thickly forested mountain slopes provide the setting for the world-famous resorts of
St Moritz and Davos.
