Review of St Thomas ST THOMAS
Calling Code: +1

St. Thomas is the island of preference for those looking for ambient beauty as well as a cosmopolitan environment. With the Atlantic to the north and the Caribbean to the south, this mountainous island offers vistas in almost every direction, including lovely Magens Bay. And its lush green foliage and colorful flowers provide the ideal backdrop for any vacation.

Surrounded by all this natural glory is Charlotte Amalie, a town humming with energy. It's the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands and one of the top ten ports of call in the Caribbean. For good reason. Charlotte Amalie boasts some of the finest duty-free shopping available, especially on the Waterfront and Main Street. Be on the lookout for fine jewelry, leather goods, perfume, crystal and much more. And don't forget our generous duty-free allowance!

As you wander through this harbor town, you'll be amazed by all the attractions. You may want to climb the "99 Steps" for one of the many glorious views of Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

For a trip back in time, visit the historic Fort Christian. Constructed in 1672 by Dutch settlers, it's one of the oldest structures in the islands. Don't miss the Virgin Islands Museum housed in the fort's dungeon (formerly a prison). There's also Emancipation Park, where Governor von Scholten announced the emancipation of slaves in 1848. While the town of Charlotte Amalie has much to offer, be sure to allow plenty of time for some of the island's other highlights. Mountain Top, for instance, offers breathtaking views of turqoise waters and the "world's best banana daiquiri."

Nature lovers will want to visit Estate St. Peter Greathouse and Botanical Gardens, where you'll wander through a three-acre estate covered with a variety of tropical plants. From there, you can relax at Magens Bay, voted one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. Or perhaps enjoy a round of golf at the famous Mahogany Run Golf Course. Beware of the Devil's Triangle: a trio of cliffside holes so challenging that anyone who completes them with an even par score is awarded a special certificate. There's so much more to experience on St. Thomas. The cruise ships. The sport fishing. Carnival. World-class dining. We hope you'll enjoy it all.
