The Federation of St Kitts and Nevis comprises two well-watered volcanic islands, with mountains rising to around 1000m (3300ft). The islands were the first in the Caribbean to be colonized by Britain (1623 and 1628) and they became an independent country in 1983. In 1998, a vote for the secession of Nevis fell short of the 2/3 required. Tourism has replaced sugar as the main earner.
