Review of St Croix ST CROIX
Calling Code: +1

Gentle hills, turquoise waters, unique old towns and stunning beaches. These are only some of the pleasures awaiting you on the island of St.Croix. Although its the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands (84 square miles), St. Croix is one of the coziest spots in the Caribbean. And one of the worlds premier vacation destinations. Its main town of Christiansted houses numerous historic buildings, such as Government House on King Street and nearby Fort Christiansvaern. Built by the Danes in 1774, the fort has been well preserved by the National Park Service. Note the colorful restored buildings made with bricks Danish ships brought over as ballast. And if youre interested in shopping, Kings Alley Walk is just a few blocks away. Youll find something for everyone in this exotic maze of alleys lined with quaint boutiques, restaurants and endless treasures.

In Frederiksted, youll discover another network of small cafes and shops. Sample some local island delicacies like conch fritters or johnniecakes. And dont miss Fort Frederik, the site of the first foreign salute to the new United States in 1776 and the declaration of emancipation in 1848.

No trip to St. Croix is complete without sailing to Buck Island Underwater National Park, the only underwater national monument in America. Within its 704 acres of crystalline water and untouched coral reef, you're certain to discover some of the seas most exotic inhabitants. Its snorkeling trail meanders through the reef system, revealing schools of colorful tropical fish. And youll encounter all kinds of endangered species on the island itself. No wonder Buck Island is considered one of the most spectacular excursions in the Caribbean.

Dive sites in St. Croix impress even the most experienced divers. Walls. Wrecks. Caves. Reefs. Youll find them all submerged in the serenity of the Caribbean. The Frederiksted pier is ideal for day and night dives. And Butler Bays many wrecks provide the ultimate underwater discovery and photo opportunity. At Cane Bay, youll find the dramatic vertical wall to be one of the islands most exciting dives.

In addition to water activities, there are numerous other diversions on St. Croix. Like the Estate Whim Plantation, a beautifully restored 18th century sugar plantation. Its stately greathouse, windmill and sugar factory ruins instantly take you back in time. In the St. George Village Botanical Gardens, youll see a collection of more than 1,000 species of tropical and flowering trees, shrubs and vines among the ruins of a 19th century plantation village. At Salt River Bay, you can explore the same spot Columbus explored when he made his second voyage to the New World. Or take a trip through the heart of the semi-rainforest along Mahogany Road. The canopy of vines and massive mahogany trees are certain to overwhelm you.

Whether the purpose of your visit is business or pleasure, were confident youll find St. Croix is the perfect environment in which to relax and refresh the senses.
