What were the accommodations like?
Broadwater Caravan Park    The northern Gold Coast beaches are just the spot for some great value holiday fun.

Tucked away in Southport is one of the best value absolute waterfront escapes I've found in ages. From the verandah of the The Broadwater Tourist Caravan Park villas you can cast a fishing line and almost dip your toes in the Broadwater.

There are 14 deluxe villas, all fully self-contained with two bedrooms, colour TV and VCR, air conditioning and TV in the main bedroom. The views are million dollar, with the Versace resort and the white sails of Marina Mirage straight opposite.

The park has 240 sites for caravans and tents. Park facilities include swimming pool, tennis courts, recreation and TV rooms and an open playing field for the kids to run around. Next door is Shane's Watersports, where you can hire jet skis, canoes and sail boards to explore the Broadwater.

A council boardwalk lets you wander right past the length of the Palazzo Versace for a close up look at the Gold Coast's ultra-luxurious five star hotel. We stopped for fish and chips at Pete's Fish Market, right next door. You can pick your own piece of fish and eat it at the tables watching the fishing boats come in, or take your freshly-cooked feast down to the Spit jetty and seaway wall.

Another great spot for a bite to eat or sunset drink is Saks Restaurant and Waterfront Bar, next door at Marina Mirage. One of the locals favourites is Bumbles Caf at Budds Beach, where the friendly waiters will bring your food out to tables scattered under shady trees near the water. Bumbles serves Mediterranean style food, Grinders coffee and pastries and cakes made daily on the premises.

All this eating called for some exercise, so we signed up with Godfathers of the Ocean for a surfing lesson with a former world champion, Michael (Munga) Barry. Munga runs lessons with soft surfboards for beginners, and wet suits or wet shirts supplied.

Tiki Village Boat Hire, down the end of Cavill Mall, hires out two seater mini fun boats and half cabin cruisers for up to six people, both a fun way to explore the Broadwater and canals.

There's plenty of accommodation, from five-star hotels, motels, self-contained apartments, backpackers and caravan parks. Sea World Nara Resort is ideal for families and includes unlimited entry to Sea World. Don't miss the chance to check out Sea World's polar bear display, which is one of the most technologically advanced in the world.
