The remote, rugged and romantic region of the Highlands
is one of Europe's last great wilderness, but experiencing it
when the weather is fine is part of the challenge - a dependable
climate is not the area's strong point. But with it's stark mountains,
windswept isles, heather-covered hills, bleak, empty moors and
mysterious lochs, it is an exhilarating place to be at any time.
Awesome places such as Glen Coe or Rannoch Moor become eerily
dramatic when shrouded in a light coating of mist, while the gruesome
history of a place as Culloden Moor- where in 1746 English soldiers
slaughtered more than 1500 Jacobite troops - is in perfect keeping
with miserable weather.
In many parts, the Highland Clearance - where the health and happiness
of sheep was put ahead of Highlanders - crushed the 1000yr old
clan system and forced thousands to find new homes. Population
numbers in many places never recovered. With the growing awareness
of the green tourism dollar, care is now being taken to ensure
the region's future viability as one of the world's premier eco-friendly
destinations - to encourage the legions of hikers, climbers, cyclists
and canoeists who invade the region once winter's worst is done.
The Highlands and islands are truly an outdoor activity paradise.
