Name: Iglesia San Jose
City: Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Describe your experience:
Iglesia San Jose is one of the earliest examples Gothic-influenced
architecture in the New World still standing. With its soaring interior capped
by a ribbed vaulted ceiling and murals depicting maritime life, the 16th century
church has been hailed as the first significant work of architecture in Puerto
Rico, as well as the oldest that has survived.
Iglesia San Jose has been closed for the past seven years due to structural problems.
Water infiltration has resulted in falling plaster and serious cracking in the
foundation, as well as damage to painting. Inappropriate repairs have also contributed
to its problems.
