Catch a ferry over to beautiful Russell, originally a sprawling fortified
Maori settlement. "The Hell Hole of the Pacific" as it was known in the rough early days of European
settlement, Russell was known as Kororareka to the Maori, meaning little blue penguin.
Protesting Maori warrior Hone Heke cut down the flagstaff here
four times and also burned the town down. Flagstaff Hill provides
panoramic views of the town and the Bay
of Islands.
Quick tips/suggestions
New Zealand's first capital was nearby. Christ Church, the oldest surviving
church in New Zealand is among the historic buildings. Cruises around the bay also depart from the wharf;
big game and light tackle fishing are also popular.
Best Way to Get Around
Ferries run regularly to Paihia and Waitangi and a cary ferry
links Russell to Opua.
