Name: Whakarewarewa Thermal Village
Address: Tryon Street
City: Rotorua, New Zealand
Phone: +64 (0)7 349 3463
What's it like?
Whakarewarewa Thermal Village is where family members took survivors
of the eruption of Mt Tarawera as they endeavored to rebuild their lives. With
the demise of the Pink and White Terraces, the Whakarewarewa Village and Reserve
became a showcase for the geothermal wonders of the district, and now Tuhourangi
and Ngati Wahiao are the guardians of Whakarewarewa's spectacular geothermal activity
- Pohutu and Prince of Wales geysers, pools of boiling water and bubbling mud.
Under the watchful eye of the Whare Tupuna (ancestral house), Tuhourangi/Ngati
Wahiao have adapted to this unique way of life and again welcome visitor to share
in their culture as they once did at the Pink and White Terraces.
Experience the twice daily cultural performance, wood, bone and jade carving displays,
as well as weaponry, musical instruments, and flax weaving demonstrations. Visitor
participation is actively encouraged. Sample corn on the cob cooked in the boiling
champagne pool or sample a midday thermal hangi meal.
If you know of some great markets or festivals we're missing,
review it for us!!
