Address: Tarawera Rd.
City: Rotorua, New Zealand
Phone: +64 (0)7 350 0440
What's it like?
Over 100 years on and now known as the Buried
Village, the excavated village of Te Wairoa offers a first hand
insight into the devastation,
chaos and mayhem that transpired the night the of June 10, 1886 when Mount Tarawera volcano
erupted.
Violent and unexpected, the eruption was New Zealand's greatest natural distaster.
For more than four hours, rocks, ash and mud bombarded the peaceful village below.
Te Wairoa Village, in a valley above Lake Tarawera, was established
by a Christian missionary in 1848. By the 1870s it had become
a busy staging post for travellers to the Pink and White Terraces.
As well as ending more than 150 lives, the eruption destroyed the
eighth wonder of the world - the
Pink and White Terraces.
Inspect the village where Maori whare and settler buildings
have been excavated to their original floor level. Remnants and
artefacts recovered from the rubble help to display life at the
settlement before, during and after this monumental event and
help portray the villagers' stories of both tragedy and survival.
Wander the scenic
pathways that link the excavated
sites, enjoy unspoilt native bush and the Te Wairoa stream, full
of Rainbow Trout.
If you know of some great markets or festivals we're missing,
review it for us!!
