Name: Sir Ernest Shackleton's Expedition Hut
City: Ross Island, Antarctica

Describe your experience:
Built to serve as a base camp and scientific laboratory for Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1907-09 push toward the South Pole during the golden age of polar exploration, the Expedition Hut has withstood nearly a century of exposure to extreme temperatures and countless blizzards.

While the building was never intended to last much beyond its service to the expedition party, which was forced to turn back just 92 miles short of the Pole, the hut and its original contents have nonetheless endured, albeit in urgent need of conservation.

A plan for preserving Shackleton's base camp has been developed, but a strong campaign of fund-raising and advocacy must be established if this unique time capsule is to be preserved for future generations.
