ROME
Calling Code: +39
Italy's capital and largest city is Rome, the Eternal City. Resting astride the Tiber River, between the Appenine
Mountains and the Tyhrrhenian Sea, Rome is one of the world's richest cities, in history, art and architecture, and one of the
great intellectual, cultural and religious centers.
Vatican City, a sovereign state within Rome's city limits, is the physical and spiritual center of the Roman Catholic Church, and
the residence of the Pope.
Visitors arriving by air will land at either the main airport, Leonardo da Vinci (also called Fiumicino), 16 miles southwest of the
city, or Ciampino, about 12 miles southeast of the city. Once in Rome, visitors are safest using trains, buses and taxis, rather than
trying to drive themselves.
Rome is so packed with treasures that it's difficult to make a short list of things to see, but the Colosseum is definitely among the
most famous monuments. Construction began circa CE 70, and the structure was dedicated in CE 80 in a ceremony that included 100 days
of games.
