Name: Temple of Hercules
City: Rome, Italy

Describe your experience:
Wherever Romans go in the Eternal City, they walk in the footsteps of history. But the Temple of Hercules, built along the Tiber in the 2nd century BC, has special significance. According to legend, it was at the site of this elegant circular temple, with its 20 corinthian columns, that Hercules rested from the tenth of his labors. And it was here, overlooking the ancient city's port and its thriving central market, that the commercial heart of Rome first beat strongly.

After much repair, the scaffolding was removed in 2000 for the first time in 20 years, and the Temple shone as an enduring symbol of how cultural touchstones can be rescued - not just for citizens of Rome, but for the world at large.
