QUEENSTOWN
Calling Code: +64 3
On your right, the Remarkables' near-vertical rocky
peaks loom as if a wingspan away. Teal-blue Lake Wakatipu fans
out below in the shape of a seat, its path dictated by snow dusted
mountains plunging dramatically to its shoreline. Ahead are the
Kawarau and Shotover Rivers, silvery threads glinting under a
bright sun. And on the left, Coronet Peak awaits its winter coat.
Queenstown, on the lake at the heart of this picture-postcard territory was born in 1860 amid the gold rush and blessed with
its name in homage to reigning Queen Victoria.
A mere 20 years ago, this area west of Otago was a sleepy hollow
where South Islanders headed for summer holidays. Today, Queenstown
is the self-styled adventure capital of the world, but when the
party ends, the Wakatipu region with its stunning lake and surrounding
mountain scenery, materializes as the real attraction. It's the
resort town of the South Island and every tour stops here. There's
a fabulous range of facilities, a activities, restaurants and
nightlife.
There is great skiing in winter and plenty of substitute adrenaline activities in the summer. Most
activities are centered around the lake and
many rivers nearby, especially the Dart, Shotover and Kawarau. White water rafting and
sledging, jet boating and boogie boarding are all
great ways to fly. Queenstown is a superbly equipped resort for more urban pursuits.
Those wishing to stroll at a more leisurely pace can take a trip on the old steamship the TSS Earnslaw, stroll through the old mining town of
Arrowtown, play
golf in Millbrook or shop in Queenstown.
