Name: Glass House Mountains
City, State: Sunshine Coast QLD Australia

What's it like?
The Glass House Mountains were named by Captain James Cook on 17 May 1770 during his voyage along the east coast of what was then known as New Holland. The reflections and shape of the mountains reminded him of the glass manufacturing houses back home in England.

Dating back 25 million years the Glass House Mountains are intrusive plugs of Trachyte and Rhyolite. The plugs were formed when magma filled hollow caves (dykes) in the earth's crust. The surrounding sandstone has been eroded away to leave the plugs exposed. The Blackall and Conondale ranges are thought to be formed from the same volcano.
