PORANGAHAU

Porangahau is close to four beaches - Blackhead,
Porangahau, Whangaheu and Herbertville - which offer safe swimming,
surfing, snorkelling, fishing and boating. The Porangahau River
is popular for water skiing, jet boating, and picnicking. porangahau
Beach is known for its crayfish and flounder, well as for a small
hill with the world's longest name: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauitamateteapokaiwhenuakitanatahu
- the place where Tamatea of the big knees, slid, climbed and
swallowed mountains, known as landeater, played his flute to his
loved one.
Nearby is a fine carved meeting house and a waka is on display
near the marae. The area has a number of craft outlets and farm
visits can be arranged. Te Angi Angi Marine Reserve covers 3.3
sq km, protecting a typical piece of the coast.
