Pitcairn Island is a British overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean about halfway between New Zealand and Panama. This isolated island rises
steeply from the sea to an elevation of about 250m (820ft) and the climate is mile and wet.
The Pitcairn Island Group also includes the uninhabited islands of Henderson, Ducie and Oeno.
Uninhabited until 1790, it was occupied by nine mutineers from the HMS Bounty,
together with some men and women from Tahiti. The present population lives in
Adamstown on Pitcairn, which comes under the administration of the British High
Commissioner in Wellington, New Zealand.
