What's it like?
Cruise around in the Bay in search of dolphins before getting up close and personal with the wild creatures. See them, hear them, and swim with them. On many occasions you'll spot Orcas, fur seals and other amazing marine life. Take the morning trip and you'll have the option of spending the afternoon exploring Urupukapuka Island at no extra cost.

We jumped on board the 12:30 departure from the Paihia wharf and were greeted by 3 Awesome staffers, the skipper, the videographer and the lady who knew everything about the animals. It was a beautiful sunny day but a bit windy and earlier the crew had spotted two blue whales out in the bay. We set off cruising towards Nine Pin, a landmark rock in the Bay when all of a sudden there was some commotion and a whale was spotted; we slowed down and worked out way towards him following the patches of still water. The whales seemed to surface for a bit, spew a bit of water and then dive back down to the depths. We never got to see a tail, but it was incredible to experience blue whales - they are the largest mammal on earth and a very rare sight in the Bay.

After about an hour or so of whale watching we set off in search of dolphins. It was out towards Deep Water Cove before we saw any dolphins. Did you know they spot them by looking for groups of birds sitting on the water? Well they were a bit too frisky to get in the water and play with, but they did swim besides the boat for a bit.

Before we knew it the afternoon was almost over and we had to head back to Paihia so some could catch the 4:30 bus. Much to my surprise the skipper announced that this was not a quality encounter and thus we were entitled to a partial refund or the chance to go again on an open ended ticket... (something none of the other operators offer by the way) We'd seen blue whales and dolphins in the wild, and spend an afternoon cruising around the beautiful Bay of Islands, but it wasn't a quality encounter? These guys sell themselves short, but who are we took look a gift horse in the mouth and gladly jumped at the opportunity to get out on the water again.

We highly recommend Dolphin Adventures over the other operators in the Bay.

Sound like something you'd like to do? Why not go ahead and book it?
