OPUA
Calling Code: +64 9
Opua is situated 6kms south of Paihia and 1km from
the turn off from State Hwy 11. In the late 1800s, Opua was a
commercial wharf shipping coal transported by rail from Kawakawa
and latterly meat from the freezing works at Moerewa.
Although these commercial operations have now ceased, Opua, with
a resident population of around 350, is now New Zealand's northernmost
customs clearance port and in line with this, offers a safe harbour
and provides modern marina facilities and a range off associated
marine service to visiting cruisers from all over the world. In
addition, many fishing boats uses Opua as their base as do a number
of charter operators.
A general store offers a range of basic provisions including fish
hooks and bait, fresh bread, newspapers, cone ice creams and postal
services. Next door, the fully licensed cafe offers a delicious
menu featuring lots of fresh local seafood and excellent coffee.
Despite the passage of time, the town retains its unspoilt charm.
The Opua Cruising Club is a popular meeting place for both visitors
and locals and will give you a taste of local hospitality and
friendliness. Check out the local markets on the third Sunday
morning of each month at the Opua Primary School - proceeds are
used to purchase always needed resources and equipment for the
children.
The port for the car ferry linking Paihia with Russell is in Opua.
