The historic town of Ross lies 30km south of Hokitika.
With the biggest operating open-cast alluvial goldmine in New
Zealand, it's a good place to interpret the history and methods
of both old and current goldmining days. The biggest gold nugget
ever found in NZ is here - the Honourable Roddy nugget.
The visitor information centre is based at the Ross Goldfields Historic Area.
