The King Country is the region south of Waikato and
holds a special place in NZ history as being the area in which
the Maori King Movement emerged during the late 1850s. Despite
the decision in 1884 to allow Europeans to enter the district,
the Maori influence has remained very strong and the opportunity
to experience Maoritanga (the Maori way of doing things) is one
of the major attractions of the region today.
