What's it like?
On the eve of St. Patrick's Day,
Le Bernardin has something better than a four-leaf clover for luck: for the
fourth consecutive time it has earned the New York Times' highest rating --
four-stars -- as announced in today's paper by New York Times restaurant
critic, Frank Bruni. The New York Times reviewed Le Bernardin in 1986, 1989,
and 1995, awarding it their highest rating each time. Le Bernardin is
currently one of only five New York Times' four-star restaurants, and the only
venue to maintain this superior status for this length of time without ever
dropping a star.
The Zagat Survey 2005 New York City Restaurant Guide also ranked Le
Bernardin as one of New York's top restaurants and just a few months ago,
Bon Appetit declared Ripert's "Butter-Poached Lobster with Tarragon and
Champagne" its "Dish of the Year."
According to restaurant critic, Frank Bruni, "None of its peers have built
legends so large and sturdy." He references a meal at Le Bernardin as " ...
sophisticated without being pretentious, multifaceted but not unduly
fanciful." Additionally, Bruni notes, "Now as before, it is a high church of
reverently prepared fish."
Le Bernardin remains at the forefront of New York dining, with a premier
lineup of food, ambiance and service. Under the leadership of chef and
co-owner Eric Ripert, just 29-years-old when he earned his first four-stars,
and co-owner Maguy Le Coze, Le Bernardin continues to deliver the highest-
quality ingredients, prepared simply and with respect.
Eric Ripert, recipient of the 2003 James Beard Outstanding Chef of the
Year, commented, "Keeping four stars is infinitely more challenging than
earning four stars. It's really an honor to share this wonderful compliment
with our staff."
Ripert added, "I've recently traveled abroad to gather new inspiration for
our menu, including trips to Brazil, Barbados, and an upcoming trip to
Vietnam. I'm so excited about these very passionate culinary cultures and
have some really exciting dishes planned to share with our guest in the months
ahead."
Maguy Le Coze, founder and co-owner of Le Bernardin, added, "When I
started Le Bernardin with my brother and help of my parents nearly 20 years
ago, I knew we were setting out do something wonderful as a family. Today,
nearly 10 years since our last New York Times review, and since Eric took my
late brother's role in the kitchen, it warms my heart to see our Le Bernardin
family continuing to share our love of food with our fellow New Yorkers -- and
the world." Maguy recently redesigned the interior of Le Bernardin with warm,
soothing tones and subtle lighting, including displaying several new paintings
from her personal art collection.
