Calling Code: +64 3

Situated 110km west of Picton, Nelson is the sunshine capital and geographical centre of New Zealand. Nelson, a popular resort town, is an area of great bauty lying between the northern edge of the Southern Alps and a great sweep of goldne sand beaches. The region enjoys a mild Mediterranean-type climate with long summers, mild winters and plentiful all year round sunshine - with more than 2500 hours of sunshine each year, it consistently rates as NZ's sunniest spot. Nelson is only a short drive away from the famous Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park, Nelson Lakes National Park, and Mount Richmond Forest Park.

It's a busy backpacker centre for those on their way south and as a starting point for journeys to the park, but the town itself has plenty to offer as well. The artistic community have found a strong voice here. Take a wander down to South Street which is the spiritual and physical home of Nelson's artistic community.

Nelson is also home to the World of Wearable Art and Collectable Cars Complex. Nelson's great climate is also conducive to fruit growing and travellers often find work fruit picking in the area. For the adventurous, Nelson is a great base for some whitewater rafting action.
