What's it like:
At the N.C. Maritime Museum, the state's seafaring history is preserved in exhibits, seafaring skills are taught in classes and workshops, and traditions are maintained through annual events like the Wooden Boat Show.

Exhibits take visitors from the dugout canoes of Native Americans through the variety of sail rigs and hull designs of explorers, traders, and privateers. They recall the brave traditions of the US Lifesaving Service, the tools of wooden boat builders and navigators, and the repair shops of the earliest outboard engines. Changing art exhibits mirror the spirit and soul of North Carolina's relationship with its sea and waterways. In the museums Watercraft centre, visitors can observe the construction and restoration of full-sized wooden boats and ship models. Artifacts from the newly discovered wreckage of Blackbeard's flagship Queen Anne's Revenge add to the excitement of one of the most significant archeological finds of the century.

The N.C. Maritime Museum conducts curator-led field trips to nearby barrier islands, marshes, tidal flats and coastal forests for visitors of all ages. Hands on activities and field trips combine to make the Summer Science School for Children, a unique "non-classroom"educational experience.
