NARA
The gentle and inquisitive deer that roam the exquisite parklands
of Nara Koen, 42km south of Kyoto are said to be the messengers of the gods. But
if you don't get the point from the wildlife, you'll surely be moved by the giant
bronze Buddha - all 15m and 25 tonnes of him - in the vast Daibutsuden Hall of
Todaiji Temple.
The temple, built in 8th century, is one of the most famous in Japan and one of a group of monuments of ancient
Nara that have been protected as world heritage sites.
It's a truly lovely place to visit. The park is huge and includes the grounds
of Todaiji and Kofukuji temples and the Kasuga Taisha shrine. Around 1000 deer
graze in the park, which contains woods, lakes and gardens. A little pagoda roofed
pavilion out in a lake ia a lovely place to contemplate the serene setting, while
the pathway leading to the Kasuga Shrine is lined with 2000 stone lanterns.
Nara has endless festivals and ceremonies - such as rice seed planting, moon views
and mountain burning - through the year.
