Review of Mount Aspiring National Park New Zealand MOUNT ASPIRING NATIONAL PARK

Rugged terrain from glacial action includes active glaciers, hanging valleys, cirque basins, U-shaped valleys. Mount Aspiring/Tititea has been compared to Switzerland's Matterhorn because of its pyramidal shape.

The park comprises both east and west sides of the Southern Alps. Because of the difference in rainfall on the two slopes, there are two distinct types of forest; however silver beech is dominant in both. Most of the alpine flora is unique to New Zealand, as are many of the numerous birds.

Access from Wanaka is through the spectacular Matukituki Valley; and the road from Haast Pass to the West Coast also runs through the park.

Climbers and hikers be warned: the weather can change rapidly for the worse, making rivers and creeks impassable, and exposure is a risk on some tracks for inexperienced or poorly equipped hikers. Professional mountain guides are available. Hiking, climbing, boating, fishing, and shooting are also enjoyed in the park.
