MOOREA
Calling Code: +689
Unlike Rangiroa, Moorea -- Tahiti's sister island -- is filled with
tourists as it offers Club Med and other such resorts. If you choose to ignore the scores of families, you will discover a smaller
beach unequaled for its panoramic view located between the village and the Beachcomber Inter-Continental Resort.
At 18km (12 miles) from Tahiti, the verdant mysticism of the "yellow lizard" (mow
= lizard, rea = yellow) flows forth from a a shredded landscape that resembles
a vast star shaped garden branching out into eight valleys. The famous Cook's
Bay and Opunohu Bay, which lay at the foot of the imposing Mount Rotui, are surrounded
by steep walls which emerge from the turquoise waters of the lagoon. There are
volcanic peaks overlooking the sand, sure to make visitors feel small thanks to
the blend of gigantic mountains, lush forests and beautiful water surrounding
them.
Along shaded pathways which lead to the Afareaitu Waterfalls, you will be intoxicated by the fragrance of flowers and the the exotic fruits which emanate from the plantations of tasty bananas and savory pineapples.
The origin of many myths, Moorea still murmurs the legend of Mou'a Puta, the fascinating
"pierced mountain" marked by the arrow of the demigod Pai which pierced the summit.
After several hours of hiking through the vegetation, you will arrive at the summit
where one of the most amazing views awaits you.
