Review of Mexico City Mexico MEXICO CITY
Calling Code: +52

Located just north of the Neo-Volcanica mountain range on the 572-square-mile Valle de México (Valley of Mexico), Mexico City (or Ciudad de México) is the most populous city in the world. It is also North America's oldest (675 years) and highest (7,349 feet) large city, and one of the world's fastest growing cities. Mexico City is officially designated Mexico's Distrito Federal (Federal District), its capital and center of its political, cultural and economic life. It is a bustling, energetic city full of sharp contrasts: Aztec pyramids and colonial palaces stand side-by-side with modern skyscrapers; fast food, traditional Mexican fare and fine dining are all readily available; music lovers can enjoy pop, mariachi, regional Mexican bands and symphony concerts; shoppers can find indigenous handicrafts in open-air markets or luxury items in upscale boutiques.

Mexico City's damp and rainy climate fosters a relaxed indoor lifestyle. Conversely, its surrounding mountains, rivers, lakes, and canals, along with the seafood-rich waters of the Pacific, attract outdoor enthusiasts as well.

Mexico City's blend of urban sophistication and access to spectacular outdoor recreation makes it a popular tourist destination and a major cultural center. Its sophistication is evident in its architecture, fashion and arts. The city has all the trappings of a metropolitan area, with two daily newspapers, a state-of-the-art convention center, professional sports teams, a diverse music and club scene, and first-rate ballet, opera, symphony and theater companies. A major seaport, the city is a vital link in Pacific Rim trade.
