Review of Matauri Bay New Zealand
MATAURI BAY
Calling Code: +64 9

Some 20km north of Kerikeri, a high inland ridge provides a dramatic first glimpse of the long and sandy Matauri Bay as it stretches north to a stand of Norfolk pines and the offshore Cavalli Islands. The northern limit of the main bay is defined by Matauri Bay Hill, topped by a distinctive stone and steel memorial to the Rainbow Warrior, now scuttled off Motutapere Island, one of the Cavalli's.

Missionary Samuel Marsden first set foot in Aotearoa in 1814 at Matauri Bay, where he mediated between the Ngati Kura people - who still own the bay - and some Bay of Islands Maori, a process commemorated by the quaint wooden Samuel Marsden Memorial Church on the road in, and a small memorial behind the beach.

Quick tips/suggestions
Accommodation in the bay is limited to the family oriented Matauri Bay Holiday Park and Ocean's Holiday Village, so make sure to book ahead during the high season.
