What was the exhibit like?
Mackay ArtSpace    Located mid-way between Brisbane and Cairns on the Central Queensland coast, Mackay's rich history, cultural heritage and regional art is displayed at Artspace Mackay.

Mackay's purpose-built art gallery and exhibition space gives visitors and locals a real sense of the region's colourful heritage.

Designed to reflect a new spirit of galleries that are highly accessible to the community, Artspace Mackay is located within the Mackay Civic Precinct and is part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network.

With its angular form and oversailing roof, the building's innovative design combines copper, pre-cast concrete and ribbed steel. The modern design incorporates a 270 metre square international standard gallery for local and travelling exhibitions, a gallery housing the permanent Rawson collection, three community workshop spaces and a caf opening onto the park.

Artspace Mackay is the second regional gallery in Queensland and one of a small handful in Australia to have an international standard gallery which has specially controlled climate and lighting features that allow it to feature old and delicate artworks.

Artspace Mackay houses a collection of Artists' Books, catalogues and reference books, and book-related works on paper. The collection is of national significance and contains a number of original artworks. The books come in all forms, shapes and sizes, and are made from a range of materials including wood, acrylic, handmade paper and stone. The library is designed as a small sanctuary in the middle of the building.

Artspace Mackay hosts an ongoing Education Program which aims to foster artistic activity in the district. The program includes artist-in-residence programs, school holiday workshop programs, after school classes and day and night-time adult classes.
