LYTTELTON
Calling Code: +64 3
Only 15 minutes from Christchurch city centre,
Lyttelton is a quaint township with a beautiful scenic harbour and many historic
buildings.
It has been the home of the Maori for 1000 years and in 1850 the first four ships arrived
with 802 English immigrants to set up Christchurch and Canterbury.
Lyttelton Harbour is a sea-filled crater of a volcanic eruption which took place
11 million years ago and is approximately eight miles long.
In the middle of the harbour are three fascinating islands, Quail, Ripapa and King Billy.
This exciting blend of volcanic landscape, historic town, working port and scenic
views enters you into another world just a short drive from Christchurch, either
through the tunnel or over the Port Hills.
Quick tips/suggestions
The harbour is a great place for boating, but if you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, the surrounding hills
are good for mountain biking and walking.
If there's a place you've stayed or something you've done, but we haven't listed, review it for us!
