Review of travel to Luxor Egypt LUXOR
Calling Code: +20

The secret tomb of Tutankhamun, Karnak, the Temple of Hatshepsut, Valley of the Kings, the Nile snaking along: all these evoke the romance, mystery and history of Egypt, and all are in the vicinity of the town of Luxor. Also known as Al-Uqsur, the city occupies the southern half of the site of Thebes, capital of ancient Egypt, and among the mightiest cities of the ancient world.

Situated on the Nile's east bank in Upper Egypt, about 419 miles south of Cairo, the area is known as "the world's greatest open-air museum" because of the remarkable archaeological richness of Thebes' ruins. Luxor and Karnak, which occupies the northern half of the ruins, comprise the "City of the Living," where people dwelt and worshipped.

Directly across the Nile lies the "City of the Dead," site of the elaborate, spectacular tombs and mortuary temples of ancient Egyptian royalty.
