Name: St Johns Anglican Church
City: Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
What's it like?
Just after midnight on Halloween 2001, an extraordinary 18th
century church went up in flames. Considered one of the most brilliant examples
of the Carpenter Gothic style in the New World, St Johns Anglican Church was just
one year short of its 250th anniversary. In an effort to save something of the
church, firefighters braved the smoke and blazing debris and emerged with a soot-covered
altar - a sacred memento for the stricken parishioners.
The world took notice, and help poured in to rebuild the blackened shell that
was once a Canadian landmark. Parishioners and locals pitched in time, effort
and money in an amazing show of love for the church. Local artisans, learning
as they worked, carved intricately scrolled wood. Work on the painted ceiling
uncovered a long-held secret: its pattern of gold-leaf stars depicted the night
sky on December 24, 1 BC - the traditional date of the birth of Jesus.
