The State of Kuwait, whose flag dates from 1961, consists of a mainland area and several offshore islands at the head of the Gulf. Kuwait CIty lies on a fine natural harbour called Kuwait Bay. Kuwait is a low-lying country covered mostly by desert scrub.
The economy is based on oil, which accounted for 95% of the exports in 1995. Kuwait
has about 10% of the world's known reserves. The country has a small fishing fleet
but, otherwise, most food is imported. The shortage of water has inhibited the
development of industries. About ¾ of Kuwait's drinking water is either imported
or produced from sea water in desalination plants.
